A Commercial From CSX Boasts Impressive Statistics
A TV commercial from the train company CSX is promoting the "transportation of tomorrow". In this commercial they trumpet their efficiency statistics which are rather impressive:
[Our] Trains can move a ton of freight 423 miles on a single gallon of fuel.I would be interesting to see under precisely what conditions these statistics hold true and how often this level of efficiency can be maintained. Those nittty gritty details will have to be researched more thoroughly in the future. However, this does make semi trucks look like money pits in comparison. According to Robert Clarke, president of the Truck Manufacturers Association, and the Department of Energy, increasing fuel efficiency of freight trucks 10% from 5.5 mpg to 6.5 mpg would save the US approximately a billion gallons of gas. And all of this could be be obtained by adding aerodynamic skirts, side mirrors, and gap enclosures to semi-trucks:
if every tractor/van semi-trailer combination truck in operation in the US adopted these technologies and improved fuel efficiency by 10%, it would translate into nearly one billion gallons per year of fuel savings. These small improvements collectively could make a huge difference in reducing fuel use.At $3 a gallon this means that we could save $3 billion dollars a year by simply adding some plastic pieces to the sides of semi-trucks. Now imagine if we switched over to trains which are not only vastly more efficient but have lower equipment and labor costs than semi-trucks. I haven't come across an in depth study on this topic but I would love to know how many billions of dollars would be saved per year. It would seem the number would be incredibly large.

Move a ton of freight 423 miles on a single gallon of fuel?
Sounds like a lot of "creative" calculation was used to get this! I doubt that a diesel locomotive would even start or run for a minute or two on just 1 gallon of fuel - so they are creatively using figures to mislead and exaggerate.
By their figures if a diesel locomotive weighs about 60 tons, then it should travel about 7 miles on one gallon, just by itself without hauling any freight cars. I doubt this!
They are misleading by trying to compare (mile tons)/gal to miles/gal. They are not the same thing.
To comment on the last comment I would think that a locomotive by itself wouldn't be as highly efficient as an entire train, if you consider that as you add cars you add weight without adding much more aerodynamic drag. If my car weighs 1.5tons and gets 30 mpg then it gets 45miletons/gal and I'm guessing that I could increase the weight of my car (say 1000lbs of cargo) without much of decrease in my fuel economy. So now I'm getting 60miletons/gal.

JPods are an ultra-light automated guideway network. JPods and CargoPods are suspended below the railsjavascript:void(0) and travel using 200 watt-hours per mile (36,600 watt-hours in a gallon of gas or 183 mpg). CargoPods can do better in that they do not necessarily require air conditioning and heating.

I believe some of you obviously overlooked the fact that railroad transportation is vastly more efficient than trucks. This PR campaign, all-be-it creative, actually has a fair bit of merit.
I think hybrid cars and trucks will be the short term transport of the future until something electric and powerful is developed.
Dont hold your breath on a powerful electric alternative.
I disagree i have seen some quite suitable roadworthy vehicles that are electric.
Hybrids will make a good transitional stop gap.

I think that electric trains could be the answer, hybrids just reduce the amount of emissions and like anything new your paying through the nose for it.

Perhaps those economy figures are quoted from when the train is up to cruising speed, say, 60 mph.
